Overview

Resident Evil Veronica is Capcom’s remake of Resident Evil Code: Veronica, continuing Claire Redfield’s story after her escape from Raccoon City. The survival horror game returns with updated gameplay, a reworked story and new visuals built using RE Engine.

This preview covers the release window, confirmed platforms, story setup and gameplay details, along with what Capcom has shared about its approach to the remake.

Veronica was revealed during Summer Game Fest 2026. You can find the other announcements from the event in our Summer Game Fest recap.

Resident Evil Veronica Release Date and Platforms

Resident Evil Veronica is scheduled to release in 2027. Capcom has not announced a specific launch date.

The confirmed platforms are:

  • PC via Steam
  • PlayStation 5
  • Xbox Series X|S
  • Nintendo Switch 2

Capcom is developing and publishing the game. The Steam listing currently allows players to add it to their wishlist.

For the separate Resident Evil 2, 3 and 4 remake announcements on Switch 2, see our September Nintendo Direct recap.

Claire Redfield’s Story and Rockfort Island

The story begins three months after the Raccoon City disaster. Having survived the outbreak alongside Leon S. Kennedy and Sherry Birkin, Claire travels to France to search for her missing brother, Chris.

Her search leads to an encounter with Umbrella’s special forces. Claire is captured and taken to Rockfort Island, where another biological outbreak leaves her fighting to escape.

That setup continues the search that brought Claire to Raccoon City in Resident Evil 2. Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi has explained that continuing her story was a major reason for choosing Code: Veronica as the next remake.

The remake also gives the developers an opportunity to explore Claire’s personality and motivations in greater depth. Her experiences in Raccoon City have changed her, and that development is part of the team’s approach to her return.

Third Person Gameplay

Resident Evil Veronica is played in third person, with no option to switch to a first-person perspective. The first-person sequence in the announcement trailer was designed to keep Claire’s reveal a surprise.

The Resident Evil 2 remake is a starting point for the gameplay. Hirabayashi has emphasised that Claire’s approach will differ from Leon’s in Resident Evil 4 and Requiem, while reflecting what she has learned since escaping Raccoon City.

Veronica’s development team includes staff who worked on the Resident Evil 2 and 4 remakes. More detailed combat systems have yet to be explained, so the confirmed camera perspective and RE2 influence give the clearest indication of its direction.

Changes from the Original Code: Veronica

Capcom is rebuilding Code: Veronica with modern gameplay, a reimagined storyline and updated graphics powered by RE Engine. The aim is to preserve the original’s identity while giving returning players a fresh version of the experience.

The title has also changed to Resident Evil Veronica. Hirabayashi has explained that the shorter name follows the series’ recent approach to using a single meaningful word as a subtitle, reflecting how important the developers consider this story within Resident Evil.

Story adjustments are planned, although the specific changes have not been detailed. Capcom is also designing the remake for newcomers, so you do not need to have played the original Code: Veronica before starting this version.
