The Forge of Potential is a new Valheim 1.0 upgrade system that lets you push maxed-out equipment one quality level beyond its normal cap. It is not part of the normal Deep North progression route, but it can give you an additional endgame upgrade before difficult content such as Mörkhalla or Kall Fimbulbringer.

Explanation
Where to Find It
The Forge of Potential is located somewhere in the Mountains.
Only one Forge ultimately exists in each world. The game reserves several possible Mountain locations during world generation, but once one of those sites is loaded, that becomes your world's Forge of Potential. Its location is permanently marked on your map once you get close enough.
How It Works
To use the Forge, you need one of the new Idols introduced in Valheim 1.0.
Battle Idols are used for weapons and tools, while Protection Idols are used for armor. Different Idol tiers correspond to different equipment tiers, so you need an Idol that matches the item you want to improve.
Place a fully upgraded compatible item into the Forge together with the required Idol. If the refinement succeeds, the item gains one additional quality level beyond its normal maximum.
Upgrading Has a Risk
The Forge of Potential is intentionally a gamble.
Each refinement currently has a 65% chance to succeed. If it fails, there is a 35% chance that the item is destroyed, with only part of its crafting materials returned. There is currently no way to improve these odds.
Because of this, you should be careful when using the Forge on expensive Deep North equipment or items that would take a long time to replace.
Is the Forge of Potential Worth Using?
For most players, the Forge is best treated as optional endgame optimization.
You do not need it to complete the Deep North or reach Kall. However, if your main weapon or armor is already fully upgraded and you have spare Idols, it gives you one more way to improve your build.
I would prioritize equipment that you are comfortable rebuilding if the refinement fails rather than immediately gambling an extremely expensive or difficult-to-replace item.
