RuneScape Dragonwilds 1.0: Combat Guide

Overview

RuneScape Dragonwilds combat is easier to manage when you attack in short bursts, keep Stamina available for defense and watch for openings. The 1.0 update adds new options to that routine, including Visceral Attacks after parrying, a separate Special Attack bar and wands for mobile magic combat.

This guide covers the combat changes that matter during ordinary encounters, how to practice them and what to check before heading into a tougher fight.

Combat Basics: Stamina and Preparation

Attacking, blocking, dodging and sprinting all use Stamina. Emptying the bar with repeated attacks can leave you unable to defend yourself when an enemy retaliates.

Use a short combination, watch what the enemy does and attack again when you have another opening. If you are learning a new weapon, leave yourself more room for mistakes instead of trying to squeeze in one extra hit.

Before leaving your base, repair your equipment, bring food and check your ammunition or runes. Practice against a familiar enemy with enough health to survive a mistimed block.

Our RuneScape Dragonwilds beginner guide covers the early survival preparations that support those first fights.

How Do You Parry?

To parry, time your block just before a parryable enemy attack connects. Holding your guard up early is different from landing a timed parry.

For practice, equip a melee weapon and shield, check your Attack skill unlocks and find a single opponent. Spend a few moments watching its attacks before trying to punish them. Look for the movement immediately before the strike, then match your block to that moment.

A successful parry in 1.0 restores 50% of your maximum Stamina. That makes it a useful way to create an opening while recovering resources for your next action.

What Are Visceral Attacks?

Visceral Attacks are optional follow up attacks available after a successful parry. You can take the follow up, use a Weapon Special Attack or move away instead.

Against an isolated enemy, practice taking the follow up. If another opponent is closing in, consider using the opening to reposition. Keep watching the whole fight: parrying one attack does not deal with every nearby threat.

Weapon Special Attacks

Weapon Special Attacks use a separate bar that refills over time. Your weapon and unlocks determine which special is available, so read its description before relying on it in a difficult encounter.

The new system allows stronger specials, including improvements to Titan’s Wrath and the Greatsword Special, alongside reduced Stamina costs. A separate resource bar does not mean you should ignore your remaining Stamina.

Spend the bar when you have a clear chance to land the attack. Watch whether the target is approaching, recovering or about to move out of reach. A successful parry can also give you an opportunity to use a special instead of taking the Visceral follow up.

Cancelling Attacks and Using Sprint Attacks

Blocking or dodging can interrupt attacks and spellcasting. If an enemy starts a dangerous attack while you are committed to your own action, use a defensive input to cancel it.

Practice against an enemy whose attacks you recognise. Start an attack, watch its response and cancel into a block or dodge when necessary. The useful habit is reacting to the enemy instead of finishing every attack you begin.

Sprint Attacks are unlocks in the Attack skill tree that let you perform a unique strike after sprinting a short distance. Check the skill description before trying one, then practice approaching a single target.

Look beyond that target before committing. Sprinting into several enemies can leave you surrounded, so keep a route back into open ground.

Which Combat Style Should You Use?

Start with a combat style you can support with your current equipment, supplies and unlocked skills. For learning parry timing, a melee weapon and shield give you a straightforward practice setup.

If you prefer attacking from range, give yourself room to retreat before opening a fight. Check for walls, ledges and additional enemies behind you. A bow or magic weapon still requires you to react when an opponent closes the gap.

When preparing another weapon or restocking at your base, our crafting stations guide explains the stations you need and where to repair equipment.

What Is the Difference Between Wands and Staves?

Wands offer faster attacks and greater mobility, while staves favour higher damage output. Wands retain elemental buildup, with Air, Fire and Water magic contributing knockdown, burn and slow effects.

Once you can access both weapon types, try them against familiar enemies. Compare how comfortably you can attack and reposition, as well as the damage you deal.

You can also equip a shield while using a wand, whereas staves are two-handed weapons.

New Combat Skills and Ability Changes

The 1.0 update adds more options to the Attack and Magic skill trees:

  • Enchant Weapon: Water adds Water damage to melee attacks and can create healing orbs.
  • Runic Refund gives magic attacks a 30% chance to preserve their runes.
  • Enfeeble weakens an enemy’s attacks.
  • Vengeance reflects enemy damage back at them.

Enchant Weapon and Spectral Arrows now last five minutes. Tempest Shield and Snare have 45-second base cooldowns.

Check the live skill descriptions for unlock requirements and rune costs. Add new abilities to a routine you already understand, then practice using them before taking on a tougher opponent.

For longer trips, plan a return to base before your supplies run out. Our RuneScape Dragonwilds fast travel guide explains how to build and use a Lodestone network for those journeys.
