Phantom Blade Zero - Boss Guide: Wu Lengshuang the Soft Sword

Overview

Wu Lengshuang, the Soft Sword is an optional boss found in the Mandate Encampment, near The Confinement. She is also tied to the Secrets of the Baishan Sect Tale, so she is worth doing if you want to complete that questline.

She is a very different kind of duel compared to most bosses in Phantom Blade Zero. Wu Lengshuang is built around countering your attacks, and blindly attacking into her guard is one of the fastest ways to lose control of the fight.

The fight only has one phase, but her mix of counters, flexible sword attacks, Red attacks, and sudden spinning strikes can still make her surprisingly difficult.

Defeating her rewards the Soft Snake Sword, which mirrors much of the counter-focused playstyle she uses against you.

This guide was written and tested on Hellwalker difficulty.

Rich Text

Her Counter Mechanic

The most important mechanic in the fight is Wu Lengshuang's purple flash.

If you attack into her guard, she can parry you. The moment you see the purple flash, stop attacking immediately.

Red Flash

Once she parries you, she can transition into several different counterattacks. These are not all handled the same way, so trying to continue your combo will usually get you punished.

Your response should depend on the follow-up:

  • Red Flash: Dodge it.
  • Blue Flash: Parry it.
  • No Flash: Either block or dodge depending on the attack.

This is the core loop of the entire fight.

Attack briefly, watch for the purple parry, then react to the counter instead of continuing to mash.

Do Not Overcommit

Wu Lengshuang heavily punishes long attack strings.

Even if your first few hits connect, continuing to attack makes it much more likely that she will catch you with her counter mechanic.

Use short bursts of damage, then reset.

Two or three safe attacks followed by a pause is much more reliable than committing to a long combo.

This also makes the fight much easier to read, since you will already be prepared for the purple flash instead of being stuck in an attack animation.

Soft Sword Range

Her weapon behaves more like a whip than a normal straight sword.

Several attacks can bend around her body and reach farther than you would expect from a one-handed weapon. This is especially noticeable during her spinning attacks.

Do not assume you are safe just because you are slightly outside normal sword range.

Keep enough distance to clearly see the animation, or stay close enough that you can react immediately to her Flash attacks.

Spinning Strike

One of her most important attacks is a wide spinning slash.

She can use different versions of this move.

One variation is a grey attack and should be dodged.

Spinning strike

Another version finishes as a Red Flash attack, giving you a clear counter opportunity if you recognize it correctly.

The main thing to avoid is instinctively trying to parry every spin.

Watch the color first, then react.

Dash Strike

Wu Lengshuang can quickly dash toward you and immediately transition into a Red attack.

Because she closes distance very quickly, this attack can catch you if you try to heal or recover just because she moved away.

Whenever she creates distance, stay ready for the dash rather than immediately treating it as a safe moment.

Two-Handed Slash

One of her more predictable sequences begins when she changes into a two-handed sword stance.

This is usually followed by a stronger spinning slash. The follow-up is much easier to deal with once you recognize the stance beforehand.

Two Handed

Instead of attacking into the setup, wait for the spin, dodge it, and use the recovery as a punish window.

This is one of the safest ways to deal consistent damage without triggering her counter mechanic.

Playing Around Her Parries

The entire fight becomes much easier once you stop trying to win through constant aggression.

Wu Lengshuang wants you to attack repeatedly so she can parry and reverse the pressure.

You should do the opposite.

Attack briefly, wait for her response, and punish the counter.

If she parries you twice in a short period, be especially ready for a sudden Red follow-up. Some reports note that she becomes more likely to transition into an unblockable thrust after repeated parries.

The safest rhythm is:

Attack → Watch for Purple Flash → React to Counter → Punish → Reset

Once you start treating the fight like a duel rather than a DPS race, she becomes much more manageable.

Ranged Options

If you are struggling badly with her counter mechanic, ranged pressure can make the fight easier.

Since her strongest defensive tool requires you to attack into her guard at close range, ranged attacks allow you to pressure her without constantly triggering her counters. Some players specifically use ranged-heavy setups to simplify the encounter.

I would still recommend learning the normal melee interaction if possible, since it teaches you how the Soft Snake Sword works before you obtain it.

But ranged tools are absolutely a viable backup if you just want to clear the fight.

General Strategy

Wu Lengshuang is a boss that punishes greed more than bad damage output.

Do not stay on offense for too long.

Use short attack strings and immediately stop when you see the purple flash.

From there:

Dodge Red.
Parry Blue.
Respect grey attacks.
Punish after her counter finishes.

Her spinning attacks and dashes are fast, but most become very readable once you stop attacking long enough to actually watch her.

The fight is much easier when you let Wu Lengshuang make the first mistake instead of constantly trying to force openings.
