Good combat habits and a little preparation go a long way in Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Learning when to defend, upgrading your equipment, and using the resources you collect can make tougher enemies and bosses much easier to handle.
This guide covers seven common mistakes to avoid, including button mashing, rushing past upgrade materials, neglecting your Hozuki Pouch, and saving consumables and Oni Power for too long. We’ll explain what to do instead so you can head into your next encounter better prepared.
Button Mashing Instead of Learning the Combat System
Aggressive attacks can defeat weaker enemies, but tougher opponents require you to read their movements and choose the right response. Lock onto your target so you can track its attacks, then use the tools suited to its defences.
Your offensive options serve different purposes:
One-handed attacks are the faster option for taking advantage of openings.
Two-handed attacks are slower, but put more pressure on an enemy’s guard and stamina.
Oni Strength helps destroy armour and shields, and is more effective at breaking guards than ordinary two-handed attacks.
If an enemy repeatedly blocks your attacks, change how you approach its defence. Oni Strength can create an opening that a string of ordinary attacks struggles to provide.
Defending well is just as important. Blocking protects you from normal attacks, but costs stamina. If you keep absorbing hits until your stamina runs out, you can leave yourself exposed.
Parrying takes more precise timing, but can interrupt an attack and create an immediate chance to retaliate. You should also recognise the situations that call for a different response:
Deflections: Certain attacks can produce a follow-up prompt, letting you turn the enemy’s attack against it.
Reflexive dodges: Evading at the last moment can help you avoid damage and reposition for a counterattack.
Grabs: Dodge these rather than trying to block them.
Pay attention during weapon clashes too. A Blade Barrage requires timed responses to a sequence, while a Blade Lock calls for rapid inputs to win the struggle. Follow the prompt instead of treating both encounters the same way.
Enemy stamina gives you another route to dealing damage. Pressure from your attacks and defensive actions can break an opponent’s stamina gauge, creating an opening for a Break Issen. These attacks are especially valuable against bosses, where breaking the enemy can lead to a much stronger punish than another ordinary hit.
You can also use environmental objects, assassinate unaware enemies, and absorb released souls with the Oni Gauntlet. Normal projectiles can be blocked, while certain special attacks have visual prompts indicating that they can be intercepted with the Oni Bow.
Rushing Past Exploration and Upgrade Materials
Following the next objective without investigating the surrounding area can leave you short of useful equipment and supplies. Check optional paths, buildings, hidden areas, and chests as you travel.
Large chests are particularly worth investigating because they can contain materials for enhancing your sword, clothing, and Oni Gauntlet. Consumables, talismans, and other rewards also make these detours useful between major encounters.
Upgrade requirements change as your equipment improves. Early enhancements may use basic materials such as Iron or Cloth, while later levels need different resources. Finding plenty of one material does not mean you have everything required for future upgrades.
Use the world map to keep track of unfinished areas, and return through Spirit Mirrors when you need to revisit a location. Exploring thoroughly builds up supplies for several parts of your character’s progression at once.
The fights between bosses give you opportunities to practise defensive timing and collect resources. Use that progress to improve your equipment before the next major encounter.
Red Souls support purchases and character improvements, while exploration provides enhancement materials. Each equipment category contributes something different:
Clothing: Increases your health and stamina.
Sword: Improves regular attack damage and Oni Armament powers.
Oni Gauntlet: Improves Oni Power and soul absorption.
Check your available enhancements, skills, charms, and supplies before challenging a boss. A difficult attempt may expose an upgrade you have overlooked or a resource you have not been using.
Preparation also includes practicing the mechanics you will need. Regular enemies provide opportunities to learn parries, reflexive dodges, and stamina pressure before you face an opponent that punishes mistakes more heavily.
Make sure the consumables you intend to use are ready as well. Collecting useful items only helps if you bring them into the encounter and use them when needed.
Saving Every Consumable for Later
Bosses are a good reason to keep supplies stocked, but difficult regular encounters can justify using them too. Healing items, food, cures, and temporary buffs are tools for getting through the game.
Use a Defense Talisman when a dangerous group is dealing too much damage. A Might Talisman can help when you need to break an enemy more quickly. If your health is low, use an appropriate recovery item instead of continuing the fight one hit away from death.
Select these items through the consumable wheel and check their effects. Carrying a talisman does not grant its benefit automatically; you have to activate it.
You can replenish supplies through enemies, chests, exploration, quests, and shops. Spend items when they help you survive an encounter or reach the next checkpoint, then replace what you used as you continue.
Neglecting Your Hozuki Pouch
Hozuki Fruit is consumed when used, but the effect depends on the pouch you have equipped. The default Hozuki Pouch restores health, making it useful during longer encounters.
Other pouches can provide different effects, including recovery for Oni Power, stamina, or resources connected to Reflex and Awakening. Check the description of each pouch you find and choose one that supports how you intend to fight.
Enhancements matter too. Improving the default pouch increases the amount of Hozuki Fruit it can carry, giving you more opportunities to recover during a difficult boss attempt.
As you explore, watch for pouch related locations and activities on the map, and collect the materials needed for enhancements. Choosing a suitable pouch and improving it should be part of your preparation alongside your equipment and consumables.
Skipping Citizens in Need
Removing corruption from an area does not mean you have finished everything there. Residents may still need help, and their requests provide optional activities alongside the main story.
These Citizens in Need are gradually marked on the map as you progress. Check them when they appear, especially if you are already exploring the surrounding area.
Rewards vary between requests, but they can include materials and resources that support equipment improvements, charm progression, and your supplies. Many requests are relatively short, making them useful detours when you are working towards another upgrade.
Before moving on, check whether a nearby citizen has something you can complete along the way. Skipping every request means missing another source of progression resources.
Hoarding Oni Power
Saving Oni Power indefinitely prevents you from using some of Musashi’s strongest tools. Blue Souls replenish the gauge during combat, so spending it effectively and rebuilding it is part of the system.
Choose an Oni Armament that addresses the problem in front of you:
Wind-Whipper: Useful when surrounded, helping you damage and control several enemies together.
The Two Celestials: Generates Yellow Souls while you attack, letting you recover health while maintaining pressure.
Earth-Shakers: Deals heavy armour and stamina damage, helping create openings for Break Issen and other follow-up attacks.
Use these abilities when they give you a clear advantage. A group that is closing in, an enemy with stubborn defences, or an opportunity to recover health can all justify spending the gauge.
After using an armament, keep fighting and absorb more Blue Souls to replenish Oni Power. Getting comfortable with that cycle lets you use your abilities more often while continuing to prepare for the next encounter.
