Mistfall Hunter is a dark-fantasy PvPvE extraction ARPG from developer Bellring Games. Like most extraction games, when you die out in the mist everything you were carrying goes with you.
Surviving other hunters is a skill in its own right, so here are some general, all-class PvP tips that'll help you out no matter what class you play. If you want more information on how to play a specific class, check out all our class guides.
Mistfall Hunter PvP Tips & Tricks
Make the Most of Traps
Consumables as a whole are underrated. Of all these under-appreciated items, traps sit at the top of the list.
Traps sit in the area and hinder any enemy who crosses them, but you don't actually need someone to step on one for it to do its job. Simply having a trap down can zone an enemy, creating a sort of invisible wall between you and them, due to their fear of stepping on it and setting it off.
Traps take a while to deploy and they can be destroyed, so they aren't foolproof, but they're awkward for a melee player to take out, which makes them especially handy against close-range opponents.
Drag NPCs Into the Fight
The map is full of NPCs, and you can pull them into your PvP fights to tilt the fight in your favour. If there are any near where a fight is kicking off, move towards them and lure them in, then position yourself so they end up closer to the enemy than you are. Even if all the NPC does is interrupt or stagger the other player, that extra bit of pressure can be enough to swing the fight your way.
Close Doors Behind You
Shutting doors as you move through the map makes it harder for other hunters to sneak up on you, as you can hear when they're being opened near you.
It also leaves less of a trail for anyone tracking your movements. An open door tells a hunter someone's been through recently, so don't be the one advertising your route.
Pick Your Moment and Fight Late
Holding off on fights until later in a run can give you a significant advantage. By that point, players are more likely to have burned through their healing supplies, whereas at the start everyone's fresh and stocked.
Unlike a battle royale, hunters don't really get stronger as the match goes on, since they (usually) aren't gearing up mid-run, so there's no reward for rushing in early. Let others wear themselves down first, then strike.
As a bonus you'll also be able to pick up all the juicy loot they've been busy collecting!
Lurk Around Recall Bells
If you're hunting players rather than avoiding them, recall bells are a great locale to stalk. Everyone needs one to extract, which makes them a reliable place to catch hunters on their way out. There are several dotted around the map so you won't always find someone, but you can see on the map when a bell has been rung, which tells you exactly where to head if you're nearby enough.
Recall bells take some time to come online so until then the treasure areas are also a good spot to visit. Or you could of course head to a recall point early, which brings us to our next point.
The Tactical Prop Hunt
For a cheekier approach, use the tactical map to turn yourself into a prop and wait near a bell. It feels a bit dirty, but it's a surprisingly effective way to go player hunting: sit still as a harmless vase, let a hunter wander in to ring the bell, and pounce.
Movement Abilities Are Key
Fights in Mistfall Hunter are mobile. Nobody stands still, so mobility matters whichever way you play: melee needs it to close the gap and stick to a target, ranged needs it to keep that gap open. Abilities like the Mercenary's Hammer Spin is great for taking on multiple targets in PvE, but less useful in PvP where players are smart enough to move out of your whirlwind. Hammer Dash, however, is crucial.
Movement spells tend to carry a long cooldown, but you've always got your default dashes to fall back on for running someone down between casts.
Save the Horn, Stay Topped Up
It's tempting to drink from your horn freely since it refills after every run, but its instant heal is far better saved for the middle of a PvP fight, when you need health right now rather than ticking back over time.
For everything else, lean on your heal-over-time potions to keep yourself full between engagements. There's nothing worse than getting jumped at half health, so make topping up a habit, and don't use the horn to do it!
Being Dashed Through? Dash Straight Back
Melee skirmishes get chaotic, and it's easy to lose track of where an enemy has darted off to, especially when you've got them on the ropes and they're scrambling to escape.
Rather than fighting the camera to flick a full 180 and chase, just dash backwards. Nine times out of ten they've dashed through you to get behind you, so a backward dash carries you the same way they went, and you know for certain you've moved in the right direction.
Use Sound, Both Ways
Hunters are noisy. If you hear stomping nearby, you've got a choice: follow it to pick a fight, or sit tight and wait them out. Just remember it cuts both ways, because they can hear you just as easily. Stomp around carelessly and you'll draw hunters straight to your position.
The Real Reason You're Losing: Gear Up
Sometimes losing fights comes down to being out-geared, plain and simple. Spend a few runs focused purely on looting: hit the treasure chests, take on missions for rewards, and extract with the goods.
Sell what you pull on the auction house, then buy pieces suited to your class. While you're looting, check an item's auction value to judge whether it's worth holding onto. You don't need a full set of blue or purple, but a green set is cheap, easily affordable, and enough to stop you getting outclassed. The combat bags from excursions are worth grabbing for this too.
It's worth noting that generally speaking you'll have more success waiting until you are fully kitted out with blues/epics as opposed to adding one piece to your existing otherwise weaker loadout. Hold onto the good gear and when you've got a full set, put it on and go hunting - yes there's risk in losing it all, but you'll also be significantly stronger for the PvP fights, as opposed to just +10% stronger with one piece on.
Position Wins Fights
Never underestimate where you're standing. High ground is valuable, handing you sightlines and the initiative, while choke points are deadly, funnelling enemies into a spot where you control the fight. Choose your ground before a fight starts and you're already halfway to winning it.
Likewise, if you see an enemy in a spot that you know is going to be a real pain to fight in, don't engage! If you have to venture to a fight-averse area, get looting and then get moving. Don't linger in those spots.
Learn Every Class in the Training Range
Finally, spend time in the training range with every class, not just your own. It sharpens your own play, of course, but more importantly it teaches you what each class is capable of, so when you run into one out in the mist you already know what's coming and how to answer it.
