Overview

The Mercenary is a common sight on battlefields across the continent, known for their robust physical condition and combat skills among the Mistfall Hunter classes.

They frequently engage enemies up close, utilizing their proficiency in weapons like Hammer, Sword, and Shield. Their exceptional abilities in head-on fights make them a versatile force, equally effective in solo battles or as part of a team.

Strengths And Weaknesses

As the Mercenary, you'll hold the front line of the party, getting up close against enemies and dishing out constant melee damage while your teammates fight from behind and follow you.

This class has two distinctive branches: The Sword and Shield offers more defensive and combo options, while the Hammer allows you to jump in the middle of the action and stun enemies.

This is an ideal class for newcomers as the Mercenary is not reliant on precise mechanics and it is easy to pick up.

  • Highest HP out of all classes
  • Great for newcomers; has simple class Skills
  • Sword and Shield offers a balanced playstyle, great for PvP
  • Hammer allows offensive frontlining and is great for PvE
  • Defensive options to reduce incoming burst damage
  • Offers team buffs with War Cry
  • Low damage output compared to other classes. Relies on the team to deal burst damage.
  • No ranged damaging options
  • Sword and Shield relies on Perfect Blocks to be optimal
  • Hammer Moveset is slow and telegraphed
  • Easy to kite in open terrain by ranged characters

Sword and Shield Abilities

The Sword and Shield's Skills combine offensive and defensive options alike. This wide-ranging arsenal allows the Mercenary to excel in extended melee duels.

Block / Perfect Block

Raise the shield to block enemy attacks from the front. You can hold down to maintain the blocking stance. Pressing Block at the exact time a melee attack hits will trigger a Perfect Block, stunning the enemy for a brief time.

Learning the Perfect Block timing is essential for PvP success. As the Mercenary, you'll often clash against other melee classes like Withered Knight and Shadowstrix. Being able to trigger a Perfect Block reliably will get you the upper hand in most encounters.

Impalement

Thrust forward with your sword, dealing damage and gaining 2 stacks of Sword Tip. While in the Blade Edge or Strong Edge state, your travel distance is increased.

Use Impalement as a fight initiation tool. Enemies will often not expect it, and it will shorten the time needed to reach the Edge Blade State. If the fight extends, you will be able to use Impalement again while in the Blade Edge state, enhancing it.

Shield Dash

Shield Dash allows dashing forward with the shield, blocking attacks from the front and gaining Movement Speed. Enemies hit take Physical Damage. Shield Dash can be cast while blocking.

Use this as an alternative gap-closing to Impalement if the enemy is attacking you. Shield Dash keeps your guard up while dashing.

Shield Slam

Unlocks at Level 7

When using Shield Slam, you'll jump with your shield raised and smash it into the ground, dealing Physical Damage and reducing enemy Movement Speed for a period of time. While jumping with the shield, you can block frontal attacks and gain a period of Super Armor.

Shield Slam is a more telegraphed version of Shield Dash. Hitting enemies with it is more unreliable, but it grants Super Armor and deals higher damage.

Stacked Slash

Gain 1 stack of Sword Tip when a melee attack hits. When gaining 6 stacks, you enter the Blade Edge state, and after gaining 12 stacks, you enter the Strong Edge state.

When you're in the Blade Edge state, you can use Stacked Slash, dealing damage horizontally. In the Strong Edge state, Stacked Slash is enhanced, gaining damage, distance, and granting Super Armor.

You'll need to choose the best time to use Stacked Slash. Most fights don't drag on long enough for you to reach the Strong Edge state, so in some cases you'll need to use Stacked Slash early to secure the win.

Stonebreaker Slash

Unlocks at Level 4

After using Stonebreaker Slash, you enter a defensive stance, blocking attacks from the front and then stabbing the ground with the sword, dealing Physical Damage. Shortly after, do an upward strike with the sword, dealing Physical Damage and scattering rocks around.

Stonebreaker Slash can trigger a Perfect Block if it's activated as an attack hits. If successful, enemies hit are knocked back and you dash forward while slashing. This Skill has a shorter base cooldown in trio mode.

This Skill is a great parry-like retaliation tool. You should use it when it's off-cooldown and try to triggger a Perfect Block with it.

Whirling Cut

Whirling Cut dashes the character forward, performing 2 slashes.

A high-damaging option among the Mercenary's arsenal, which can catch enemies off-guard.

Hammer Abilities

The Hammer's Skills are slow and heavy-hitting. Reaching enemy ranged characters will not be easy, so choose the right time to go in.

Earthshaker

Unlocks at Level 7

Earthshaker smashes the ground with the hammer, dealing Physical Damage and slowing down enemies hit. Hold the button to charge up to 2 times, gaining Super Armor. Has additional effects based on charge level:

  • Charge Lv. 1: Increases damage and Area of Effect
  • Charge Lv. 2: Additionally, grants Super Armor while casting, and strikes twice.

Earthshaker is perfect to use when there are multiple enemies around you. If you can withstand their attacks and charge the Skill, it will turn the tide in your favor most of the time.

Hammer Dash

With Hammer Dash, dash forward with the hammer, dealing Physical Damage to enemies in your path, and perform a sweeping attack at the end, dealing high Physical Damage.

This Ability has a shorter cooldown in Trio mode.

Hammer Dash is the Hammer's best gap-closing option, though it lacks in comparison to other movement Skills.

Hammer Spin

Hammer Spin deals Physical Damage while swinging the Hammer around yourself. Holding down the Skill maintains the spin and consumes Energy.

You briefly gain Super Armor when casting the Ability.

It is a great DPS option if you don't need to gap-close into enemies.

Power Hammer

Light Strikes can be chained up to 3 times, dealing Physical Damage. Power Hammer allows charging Light Strikes by holding down the button, increasing damage dealt.

Punishing Hammer

After launching a standard attack (Light Strike), you can use Punishing Hammer to dash forward, slamming the hammer into the ground ahead. This attack can be charged by holding down the button.

Punishing Hammer is a great tool to swap targets and finish a light attack combo.

Skullcrusher

Unlocks at Level 4

Skullcrusher smashes the hammer forward, dealing Physical Damage. This Skill can be charged by holding down the button, granting additional effects:

  • Charge Lv. 1: Performs an additional sweep attack.
  • Charge Lv. 2: Leaps forward and smashes the ground, and gains Super Armor while casting.

Skullcrusher is most effective when you can charge it all the way up to Level 2, as it will gain high damage and allow you to gap close.

Warhammer Sling

Unlocks at Level 10

Warhammer Sling sends rocks flying far away to deal Physical Damage and reduce enemy Movement Speed and Dodge Distance for a period of time.

It is a great choice when your team lacks ranged attacks or slowing effects.

How to Build

The Mercenary is one of the easiest classes to build around since it is pretty straightforward. First off, you'll want to pick between Sword and Shield and Hammer, since each weapon type has its own Talents. To avoid wasting your Talent Points, which are scarce in the early game, specialize in the weapon that best fits your playstyle and role in the team:

  • Sword and Shield: Can block enemy attacks and deal serious damage in long combos
  • Hammer: Easy stun capabilities and offensive frontlining options

Best Sword and Shield Abilities and Talents

The Sword and Shield shines through long combos and battlefield versatility. We'll take the abilities Shield Dash and Stonebreaker Slash to increase our survivability and stun potential, which will let us drag battles for longer, allowing our allies to dish out more damage while building up the Blade Edge state. You'll want to keep an eye out for your teammates, and use your abilities to aid them if someone jumps onto them.

The following Talents aim at increasing the Sword and Shield's combo potential and its versatility in battle, as well:

  • Sword Edge: Sword attacks from Abilities also grant 1 stack of Sword Tip.
  • Blade Charge: While in the Blade Edge or Strong Edge state, Sword and Shield attacks deal increased damage.
  • Indomitable Will: Stacks the Indomitable Will effect when attacked (Indomitable Will increases Physical Defense and can stack up to 10 times).
  • Stacking Blade: Reduces the number of attacks needed to enter the Blade Edge to 4, and Strong Edge to 8.
  • Rising to the Challenge: After blocking during Shield Dash, enemies hit are also stunned.

Best Hammer Abilities and Talents

The Hammer is best used as a frontline tank, jumping into the middle of the fight and stunning enemies. For this purpose, the best abilities are Skullcrusher and Earthshaker. Skullcrusher provides a high mobility option in an otherwise immobile moveset, while Earthshaker is the best pick when you're surrounded by several enemies, as it can deal high damage when charged up and slow down enemies, granting your team the high ground in the battle.

These Talents are perfect for improving the Hammer's natural tank capabilities, allowing you to stay on the battlefield for longer:

  • Unstoppable: When triggering a Super Armor Clash, enemies will be stunned.
  • Hammer of Convergence: Increases Physical and Magic Resistance while having Super Armor.
  • Iron-Clad Body: Casting Skullcrusher grants Super Armor.
  • Leap Step: You can move, dodge and jump while charging Earthshaker.

Best Affixes

The best Affixes for the Mercenary are those enhancing its fighting potential:

  • Stoic: When Health drops, increases Physical and Magic Resistance. Upon reaching a certain level, also increases Health.
  • Tenacious: Increases Maximum Health. Upon reaching a certain level, increases Healing.
  • Wrath: When Health drops, increases Physical and Magic Damage. Upon reaching a certain level, also increases Attack.
  • Valor: Increases Attack. Upon reaching a certain level, also increases Defense Penetration.

Tips and Tricks

Maintain frontline presence

Always stick to the front of the team, putting yourself between your squishy teammates and enemies.

Use CC wisely

Watch out for allies in danger. As a Mercenary, you have the crowd control potential to save them from any incoming enemies.

Know when to block or avoid a hit

You're resilient in long battles thanks to your blocking and Super Armor, but burst hits can bring your HP down and make you unable to fight. Avoid getting hit by high-damage abilities that you can't block.

Don't let yourself be kited by ranged players

The Mercenary has a difficult time reaching enemy backlines, so you'll need to flank them or reach them with a high-range ability like Sword Dash or Skullcrusher.
