With every new season of Diablo 4, the experience grind begins again — from leveling your characters from level 1 to 60, to pushing your Paragon levels from 1 to 300! These tasks can feel daunting; hours of running around can sometimes feel like you’re getting nowhere. But here at Mobalytics, we’ve got you covered.
As a tip, make sure you always have elixirs and incense active. You can gather materials throughout the game to craft them, and they both provide bonus experience that stacks together.
If you’re looking for a complete guide to the leveling process, check out our in-depth articles. For now, let’s cover the main ways to gain experience.
Level 1 to 60 Grind
The most basic method is simply killing monsters. Monster experience scales with your level, and if you want to see major jumps in XP gains, you’ll need to set up your character to move into higher difficulty tiers. Each difficulty tier increases the experience reward, making it a big incentive to push your character’s limits.
Throughout the map, you’ll encounter Grim Favors. Once you’ve completed these events and gathered 10 Grim Favors, you can head to the Tree of Whispers to turn them in for a cache. (Note: This unlocks after completing the campaign, so if you haven’t done that yet, dive in and enjoy the story!) Whisper Caches grant big boosts of experience — and like monster kills, the higher the difficulty, the more XP you’ll get. For example, in Torment 1, a Whisper Cache grants 370,270 XP, but in Torment 4, it jumps to 1,481,080 XP.
As you level, you’ll start to obtain Nightmare Dungeon keys. These dungeons are excellent for XP farming because they often include events like Cursed Shrines and Cursed Chests — wave-based encounters on a timer where you just keep killing until time runs out. This makes Nightmare Dungeons prime locations for experience farming while leveling.
You’ll also encounter Helltides, which are fantastic for two reasons:
They offer very dense monster spawns.
They’re packed with item chests and events.
While running through Helltides, look for two types of spires: one that drains your life slowly over time, and another that periodically damages you. Despite the dangers, the sheer number of monsters they spawn makes them incredible for XP farming. As you kill monsters, you’ll collect Cinders, which can be used to open Helltide chests. These chests not only reward items, materials, and elixirs, but they also grant massive XP. The final event in Helltides is the Blood Maiden — great for XP, especially with a group — but until your character is strong enough, it’s best to hold off. Once you’re ready, though, definitely give it a shot!
Level 60 and Beyond: Paragon Farming
Once you hit level 60, the Paragon grind begins. The events mentioned above still contribute significantly to Paragon leveling, but additional activities open up as well.
First, let’s talk about The Pits. This is everyone’s favorite place to push high, test the limits of their build, and run at max level. While it’s fun, it might not be the most efficient XP method. To optimize your runs, find a fast build that can go from start to boss kill in under three minutes. As you clear higher tiers quickly, you can steadily move up.
While group play isn’t for everyone, adding teammates can greatly boost your XP per hour. Standing near another player grants a 5% XP bonus, but more importantly, if you split up (one person goes left, another right), you progress the dungeon twice as fast. You still gain all the XP from monsters killed by teammates, even if you’re not nearby — you just need to be inside the same dungeon.
At level 60, you’ll also unlock Infernal Hordes. This mode spawns waves of monsters across 6, 8, or 10 rounds, each lasting a minute. To maximize XP here, you’ll need one of two things: either a build capable of clearing entire rooms in a single cast (like Lightning Spear or Cataclysm), or a group of friends where everyone spreads out and slays as many monsters as possible, as quickly as possible.
Final Thoughts
These two methods — The Pits and Infernal Hordes — are the most effective ways to farm XP and Paragon levels post-60, and they can be done solo or in a group.
So get out there, slay some demons, and rack up those Paragon points!
