LoR Deck Guide: Lucian Azir

How to Play Lucian Azir

Hey guys NicMakesPlays here and today I’m going to go over my new Lucian Azir deck, it is extremely explosive and can pack on huge damage.

As always with our deck guides, we’ll be covering the deck’s win condition, mulligan phase, matchups, and tech cards.

If you enjoy Lucian Azir, you may also want to try out Azir Burn.

Win Condition

The main goal of this deck is to utilize Sand Soldiers to quickly output huge damage with Scouts and level up Lucian. The expected turn to win the game is around turn 6 with a leveled-up Lucian, Inspiring Marshall, or Cithria the Bold.

The Mulligan Phase

Azir Lucian LoR Mulligan

This deck always wants to mulligan for a Sand Soldier generator like Emperor’s Dias and Azir + Lucian.

If you already have these you can mulligan for a spell to protect Lucian against decks with removal, or a Shaped Stone to help deal with decks such as Fiora.

Card Choices & Key Synergies

Lucian Level 1 (LoR card) Azir level 1 (LoR Card)
Emperors Dias and Azir generate Sand Soldiers that can easily level up Lucian.

If you have Emperors Dias + Azir and Lucian you can level up Lucian in as quick as two attacks.

After Lucian is leveled, each round when a Sand Soldier dies it can allow you to Rally.

Emperor's Dais (LoR Card)lor grizzled ranger

The Scout attack keyword on Grizzled Ranger allows for Emperors Dias and Azir to generate Sand Soldiers when you attack multiple times a turn.

You can attack with your Scout units which allow Emperors Dias and Azir to summon Sand Soldiers, then attack again to do it again.

This allows for huge damage output each turn.

Brightsteel Protector has multiple roles in this deck.

It’s good defensively to protect Lucian, but it also has amazing offensive capabilities with challenger units such as Fleetfeather Tracker and Valor.

You can use Blinding Assault to summon Valor, and then use Brightsteel Protector on it to give it Barrier.

With Barrier now on Valor, you can use Valor’s Scout attack + Barrier to safely kill an enemy unit and then attack again and remove another unit with your regular attack.

If you also have a Sand Soldier generator you also will get Sand Soldiers on both attacks which will apply pressure.

Inspiring Marshal (LoR Card)Cithra the Bold (LoR Card)

Inspiring Marshall and Cithria the Bold allows you to buff your Sand Soldiers to start packing on huge damage.

It gives your Sand Soldiers as well as other units you summon each round +2|0.

If you have Inspiring Marshall + Scouts units and Sand Soldier generators, then you can attack multiple times for turn and summon buffed Sand Soldiers each time.

Cithria the Bold also buffs your Sand Soldiers and gives them Fearsome as well as +1|+1 so they push more damage and are harder to kill.

You can use Inspiring Marshall and Cithria the Bold to go for game.

Shaped Stone (LoR Card)Sharpsight (LoR Card)

Shaped Stone and Sharpsight can allow you to protect your units, win combat trades and push for game.

These cards are all cheap in terms of mana cost and are crucial in protecting Lucian to achieve his level up.

You can also use these on your Sand Soldiers when your opponent thinks they are safe to block them to safe Nexus health.

The final use of these is you can burst for game by pushing for extra damage with their attack buff.

Good Matchups

This deck is amazing against Lissandra Trundle and other decks that have a lot of board clears.

This is because it’s packed with 2 Ranger Resolve, 3 Shaped Stone, and 3 Sharpsight which allows you to keep Lucian alive, as well as keep your other units protected.

Your opponent can attempt to use Avalanche on your field for 4 mana and you can keep your field alive for 1 mana with Ranger’s Resolve.

Avalanche (LoR card)

Another perk of this matchup is that Azir and Emperors Dias are hard to remove for Lissandra Trundle.

These cards can keep generating value and are immune to most board clears like Avalanche and Withering Wail, so if they Withering Wail to kill your Sand Soldiers you just summon more next turn.

Bad Matchups

The bad matchups for this deck are Targon and Fiora.

Against Targon they have a lot of stuns, card advantage, and healing to stop from dealing damage.

The way to win this matchup is to keep continued pressure while holding Lucian back and only attacking when your opponent is tapped under Hush.

Hush (LoR card)

If you can achieve a Lucian level up then it’s possible to kill your opponent in one turn if they tap under enough mana to protect themselves.

The key to beating Fiora is to keep Shaped Stone and Sharpsights in your mulligan and try and find a spot where you can use them to kill Fiora.

fiora level 1 jpg

If your opponent attacks into Shaped Stone you can kill Fiora, and if they pass with excess mana then you can pass back so they lose their mana, then make a huge push next turn that they have to block and you can Shaped Stone in combat against Fiora.

Tech Choices

  • Ancient Preparations

Ancient Preparations (LoR reveal)

    • This card is a good one drop because it allows you to find Lucian and Azir more often while also fine-tuning your hand for whatever you need.
    • Another perk of this card is it enables Shaped Stone to give +3|+1 more often.
  • Cataclysm

Catacylsm (LoR reveal)

    • If you use this card on Lucian then you can remove things with his quick attack while also summoning Sand Soldiers when he attacks if you also have Emperor’s Dias or Azir.
    • If you use Cataclysm on a Scout unit then it allows you to Rally since Scouts ready your attack, and then you can attack again.
  • There are other potential options such as Greathorn Companion, Golden Aegis, Single Combat, Voices of the Fallen, and Rite of Calling but I don’t think any of them are good enough to make the cut.
