Major Changes Coming in Next Year in LoL
Hey everyone! It’s that time of year again when Riot announces some of the changes coming in the new season. In this article, we will give you a brief overview of all the changes.
You can watch the video for yourself here!
PLEASE NOTE: We may not include everything in this blog post…
Season Structure Changes
In 2025, Riot will take a different approach to Seasons. Now, they will have three Seasons that follow different regions of Runeterra. The majority of the content created around that time will connect to the regions. This includes gameplay, skins, and champions. In each Season, the map colour will change slightly to reflect the different regions of Runeterra.
This means that instead of splits like previous Seasons, a calendar year will be split into three different Seasons with six acts.
It looks like next year will not be called “Season 15”, but instead “Season 1.”
QoL Changes
Of course, Riot can’t go into too much detail regarding the quality-of-life changes, but they are adjusting the client to make it more streamlined. In my opinion, this is a good thing to do because the client is very slow and also super buggy. It can also be difficult to find things in the client.
These changes are intended to improve the client’s visuals and not necessarily make it more optimised though, which I feel is a mistake on Riot’s behalf.
Battle Passes and Rewards
Like every other game, Riot is changing the battle pass system. Battle passes will last four months instead of two, giving me more time to unlock rewards.
Everyone will get access to a free pass, which offers rewards; you can also buy a pass for extra rewards.
Instead of an event shop and tokens, you now get free skins among additional rewards. You can also get more free skins with these passes. A full list of rewards looks like this:
- One thematic Earnable Skin Permanent
- One random 1350 RP or lower Skin
- One Title
- Two Emotes
- Two Mystery Emotes
- Three Icons
- Two Mystery Icons
- Four Champion Capsules
- 4750 Blue Essence (plus infinite repeating levels at the end of the track)
However, if you want to give Riot Games some money, here are some extra things you will receive if you buy the pass.
- Everything from the Free Pass
- Three Ancient Sparks
- One Prestige Skin
- Three Reward Skins
- Three Borders
- Seven Loot Orbs
- One Banner
- One Ward Skin
- Two Emotes
- Two Icons
- 1000 Orange Essence (Plus an infinitely repeatable 25 OE every 5 levels after 50)
Honor Changes
The honour shop is also changing. So instead of getting tokens, you will now be given a skin. If you have tokens left over, you can use them for something else.
The upcoming honor skin is Three Honors Shen which can be earned by being honor level 5.
Hextech and Masterwork Chests
They are removing masterwork chests, but hextech chests will still be available.
Champion Mastery
Champion mastery is being removed. It will be easier to earn chests as they will no longer be linked to champion mastery. Instead, they will be rewarded in the pass.
There will be three main missions related to the mastery system.
- Mission 1: Complete a Mastery milestone on any champion (infinite mission)
- Mission 2: Complete Mastery milestone 4 on any champion (once per Act)
- Mission 3: Complete 12 milestones in your Mastery Set (once per Act)
- Bonus Mission 1: Complete 24 milestones in your Mastery Set (once per Act)
- Bonus Mission 2: Complete 40 milestones in your Mastery Set (once per Act)
In my opinion, this is a good change as I feel that it’s pretty complex. Also, I feel that if you are an ARAM only player, you never got many rewards.
Event, Showcase, and Mythic Variant Capsules
They are removing Showcase capsules, and they’re moving Mythic Variants into the Sanctum as their own reward that you can consume.
Rune Changes
- The Domination tree will see three runes removed: Zombie Ward, Ghost Poro, and Eyeball Collection. These will be replaced with the following:
- Sixth Sense: Helps you detect enemy wards.
- Grisly Mementos: Grants ability haste when you destroy trinkets.
- Deep Ward: Strengthens deep wards placed in the enemy jungle by increasing their durability and duration.
Additionally, a new rune, Axiom Arcanist, has been introduced in the Sorcery tree, replacing Nullifying Orb. This rune empowers ultimate abilities by increasing their damage, healing, and shielding effects, while also reducing cooldowns after getting a takedown.
New Objectives
A new creature spawns at the 20 minute mark, delaying the baron until 25 minutes. It spawns in either the top or bottom side, depending on kill count.
New Gamemode- Swiftplay
Looking for a faster-paced game? Swiftplay is coming to replace Quickplay. It is more forgiving and faster-paced, making it ideal for beginners or players who want to learn a new champion. Everything in this game mode goes faster, so definitely give it a go when it comes out!
Turrets Respawn!
Nexus turrets will now respawn, which gives you more of a chance to get back into the game. You can find out more in this clip

In Conclusion
First, it’s nice to see Riot actively making major changes to things that people find confusing or unhelpful. The new pass makes sense and looks good on paper. I am happy that they are giving more free stuff to players, especially to ARAM-only players, which I think a lot of people are nowadays.
It is yet to be seen how they will go around major patches. This year, they have had a lot of changes and some patch notes have been really, really long as they have made a lot of changes.
Maybe they will hold off from doing these until the end of each Season, which would be ideal. It looks like each calendar year is split up into three Seasons instead of one and six acts instead of three splits, so that is plenty of time for them to make major changes.
Other than that, the new objective looks pretty cool. I am happy about the new game mode too! I think it will be perfect for trying out new champions, and it is great for when you are unsure if you can commit to a full game!
