How to Unlock the Tree of Whispers
In order to access the Tree of Whispers, you must fully complete the campaign. While you will technically encounter the Tree of Whispers during your story adventures, it’s not until the post game in which the Tree of Whispers event unlocks.
The Tree of Whispers can be found in the swamp region of Hawezar and is easily accessible via waypoint. It’s a good thing too, because you’ll be coming here a lot! You can look it up using our Diablo 4 interactive map, if you’re having troubles finding it.
The Tree of Whispers Event
Once you’ve unlocked the Tree of Whispers, you’ll immediately notice that the map is covered with various marks. These “Whispers” are spread throughout the world on a timer that resets every hour. Each of these represents what’s essentially a mini-quest. You’ll work to complete different tasks, each with varying lengths and difficulties, in order to earn Grim Favors. Collect ten Grim Favors, then return to the Tree of Whispers for a reward cache!
That’s the simple gist of it, but now let’s dive into some details.
In order to earn ten Grim Favors, players can take on various objectives. There are three Whisper tiers, all of which award different amounts of Grim Favors. The difficulty and length of the task correspond with the amount of Grim Favors that are awarded. However, depending on which tasks spawn, it may be faster to complete multiple small or medium Whispers over one large Whisper.
Here’s a look at each Whisper and the types of quests you could expect from each one.
Small Whispers: 1 Grim Favor
- Find and slay an Elite monster.
- Complete a regular Obol event.
- Clear out a cellar.
- Slay X monsters (lower amount).
Medium Whispers: 3 Grim Favors
- Slay 100 monsters.
- Travel to various locations and click each objective point.
- Cleanse Seeds of Hatred (PvP).
Large Whispers: Grim Favors
- Complete a Dungeon.
- Defeat a World Boss.
- Defeat the Seething Abomination (PvP).
After collecting ten Grim Favors, it’s time to turn them in for rewards. If you have to stop part way, don’t worry. Grim Favors are not lost when the event resets, nor will they disappear after logging out. They’ll remain accounted for until you gather what’s remaining and cash in. Additionally, if completing a medium or large Whisper would put you above 10 Grim Favors, those extras will still be retained and will count towards the next reward.
Quick tip! Completing Tree of Whispers quests is much easier and almost effortless with a highly optimized build.
Rewards
As you complete each task and earn Grim Favors, each Whisper will award some gold and exp. Then upon returning to the Tree, you’ll be awarded even more.
But that’s not the fun part.
Your efforts will not be wasted, as each completion will allow you to choose between three randomly generated reward caches. Each cache contains gold, gems, crafting materials, and more importantly, is themed around a specific gear slot. This includes weapons, armor, and accessories. There is a great chance to obtain legendaries, and depending on which cache you choose, you’ll have increased odds of acquiring a legendary of that type. Do note, the type is not guaranteed, and you can also open additional legendaries for other slots.
You may also be given a “Greater Collection” in your optional rewards. The Greater cache will reward more items overall and will guarantee at least one legendary. One other unique cache is the Chaos cache. This offers a large quantity of random items without the boosted chance towards a specific gear type. As far as overall item value, it’s a great choice.
While not the most efficient way, Tree of Whispers is still one of the ways you could farm for items with affixes needed for your current build.
Pros & Cons
The Tree of Whispers is a great way to acquire gear early on. While there are no particular “Cons” per se, we do have to consider the opportunity cost of choosing the Tree of Whispers over something else.
Pros:
- One of the best ways to farm for Aspects. This is a big deal for the early to mid game, as your build will get a huge spike in power when new Aspects are acquired. Since we can somewhat choose which legendary slot to farm, this can drastically help speed up the process.
- Following up with the above, The Tree of Whispers is fantastic for alt characters, as you’ll have access to it at level one! Forget the campaign, jump into some Whispers, and start picking up important gear from the get go.
- If you’re still working on completing many of the Dungeons for their Aspects, you can often double-up on value by doing the Dungeons with an active Whisper. May as well kill two birds with one stone!
Cons:
- You will not receive any Unique items from the Tree of Whispers. This is a pretty big deal when gearing at higher levels and does greatly restrict the potential. The Tree of Whispers is still a great means of acquiring the foundation, but going further, you’ll be better off running through Helltides and Nightmare Dungeons.
