Currencies
There are a handful of different currencies in Diablo 4, most with niche uses aside from the standard Gold. You can also view additional details right from the inventory menu.
Gold
Gold is the base resource in the game. Whether you’re purchasing items from vendors, upgrading gear, or refunding skill points; all of these will cost Gold. Gold can be acquired by slaying monsters, completing quests, selling loot, and more. Just about everything you do will reward at least some amount of Gold, which is good, because you’ll need it!
Murmuring Obols
Following a similar mechanic from Diablo 3, Murmuring Obols replace Blood Shards, and continue to allow players to gamble for items. These are earned by completing events (those red rings that pop up on the map), and more will be rewarded when the additional objective is achieved.
Gambling Obols is a great way to hunt for specific legendaries, as you’ll be able to choose the exact gear slot you want to purchase. It can potentially be worth saving them early on in order to obtain higher level gear, but be sure to spend them if you get close to the cap! (Initial capacity is 500 Obols.)
Red Dust
Red Dust is only earned in PvP zones and can be used to purchase items from PvP vendors.
Smoldering Ashes
While not available during the off-season, Smoldering Ashes are a valuable currency that allows players to purchase Season Blessings. This lets players select permanent buffs that can increase gold, experience, salvage chance, elixir duration, and more! Currently, Smoldering Ashes can only be earned via the free track of the Battle Pass. Complete tasks, earn Favor, and you’ll acquire them during Seasonal play.
Platinum
Platinum is used to purchase cosmetics from the shop. This is a paid currency, and can only be obtained by spending real money.
It’s been confirmed that the Premium Battle Pass will award some Platinum along the track.
Materials
In Diablo 4, materials are now automatically picked up when you walk over them. This is a fantastic change from Diablo 3, saving players a lot of time when farming. While every material has its own means of acquisition, a quick way to earn a sizeable amount is by completing side quests. The Cache rewards can drop a friendly bundle of goodies.
Plants
Plants are found scattered throughout Sanctuary with each region having its own exclusive herb.
- Biteberry: Fractured Peaks
- Howler Moss: Scosglen
- Reddamine: Dry Steppes
- Blightshade: Hawezar
- Lifesbane: Kehjistan
Other plants include the common Gallowvine, and the rare Angelbreath, both of which can be found in any region. Fiend Rose is the final rare plant that can only appear during Helltides.
Plants are necessary for crafting potions, elixirs, and incense at the Alchemist. These provide a great way to get an edge in combat and are definitely recommended for the more challenging group endeavours!
Ores
Iron Chunks and Silver Ores can be found via nodes all across the map. This is our primary resource for upgrading weapons and jewelry.
Scattered Prism is a rare material that is dropped by World Bosses, or occasionally Treasure Goblins. These are incredible valuable as they can add a socket to an item.
Upgrading weapons and armor will make your Diablo 4 build significantly stronger!
Skins
Rawhide and Superior Leather are used for all armor upgrades and can be easily acquired.
Slaying various beasts or wildlife will reward you with these, but you can also simply salvage your white and blue items.
Monster Parts
Different monster categories will each drop their own type of part.
These are utilized in crafting recipes at the Alchemist.
- Demon’s Heart: Demons
- Paletongue: Humans
- Grave Dust: Undead
- Crushed Beast Bones: Beasts
Salvage
The Salvage category includes special materials used for upgrading and re-rolling stats on your hard-earned legendaries. Almost all of these come from breaking down unwanted legendaries, with the exception of Forgotten Souls which are found in Helltides.
- Veiled Crystal: The easiest of these materials to acquire. These come from salvaging rare (yellow) items.
- Coiling Ward: Acquired by salvaging legendary armor.
- Abstruse Sigil: Acquired by salvaging legendary jewelry.
- Baleful Fragment: Acquired by salvaging legendary weapons.
- Sigil Powder: Used to craft Nightmare Sigils, or acquired by salvaging unwanted Nightmare Sigils.
This final category of materials is much more challenging to come by, so be sure to think carefully before expending these valuable resources!
