PoE 2 Gold Introduction

Gold is an account-bound resource in Path of Exile 2 that you will find throughout the game as a natural drop from monsters that you slay, or from items that you sell to Vendors. Gold is incredibly useful, especially during the campaign and has several known uses

Disclaimer: this guide was written before the release of Path of Exile 2 with existing information and will be updated shortly after release to add any additional information, or correct any inaccuracies that may arise from changes to the game post-launch.

Purchasing Items with Gold

What Items you can Buy

You will be able to buy and sell items with certain NPCs in town. These NPCs, known as Vendors, sell slightly different items – some will sell Flasks, Jewellery and some Caster-based items like Sceptres and Wands, while others will sell Armour and Weapons.

The items that you can buy from Vendors will vary from Normal Rarity (White), which can provide useful bases on which you can create upgrades with Currency Orbs, Magic items (Blue), which can be strong upgrades very early into your adventure, but you may even be lucky enough to find a well-rolled Rare item (Yellow) that may be a large upgrade to your character while you make your way through the six Acts of Path of Exile 2.

The items that Vendors sell will partially change as you level up, so check back for upgrades every once in a while.

Flasks

Flasks: I am mentioning these again in a separate section to further hammer down the importance of Flasks in Path of Exile 2. Flasks provide a huge amount of survivability to characters, especially in the form of Life Recovery with Life Flasks, Mana Recovery with Mana Flasks, as well as specific defensive Utility Flasks that can help prevent you from becoming Frozen, Poisoned and avoid other deadly ailment effects.

As you level up, you will find higher level Flasks that will provide greater amounts of Life or Mana on use. Vendors will also start selling these new Flasks as you progress and level up so check back often!

Respeccing

In Path of Exile 2, you can spend Gold at The Hooded One NPC in towns to remove Passive Points on your Passive Skill Tree. Once unallocated, you will be able to allocate them elsewhere, allowing you to partially respecialise (or respec) your character.  The Gold cost will depend on your level and how many Passive Points you decide to remove, increasing as you progress further and gain more levels.

Be aware: the Gold cost won’t be exorbitant, but it will be high enough that you won’t be able to completely respec your entire character whenever you feel like it. Also, you will only be able to unallocate Passives at the end of a chain of points to prevent breaking the pathing leading up to it, so your decisions on the Passive Tree still matter and should be made wisely.

During the campaign, this method of changing points around will be useful for making adjustments to your character rather than entirely reworking it from the ground up. However in the endgame, you may be able to farm up enough Gold to rework your entire character.

There will be other methods of changing points around on the Passive Tree, such as with Orbs of Regret, and possibly some quest rewards to assist you in case you decide you want to build your character differently.

Gambling

Each town has a specific NPC that will allow you to Gamble for new items. These Vendors have an infinite supply of UNIDENTIFIED Items of all varieties, which you can spend Gold on for a chance at an item of a random rarity. The item you get may be Magic, Rare, or even Unique if you’re very lucky. Gambling can be a great source of upgrades during the campaign, and may even be a way to acquire very rare Unique items in the endgame.

Don’t underestimate Gambling - while the Gold costs can be steep, this is GGG’s version of “smart loot” – instead of having specific item types drop for specific characters, Gambling provides characters an opportunity to find useful new items by spending Gold. It seems that Gambling has a higher chance to provide well-rolled items that could be very useful to lower-level characters looking for upgrades.

Trading

Speculation based on changes made in Path of Exile’s Settler’s of Kalguur League

In Path of Exile 1, Gold is also used to trade certain items to other players using the Currency Exchange Market. The Currency Exchange Market provides a quick and easy way to instantly trade commonly used consumable items such as Currency Orbs and Fragments, but not equippable items like Weapons and Armour (as of the time of writing). The amount of Gold to trade specific items depends on their rarity and type.

While we do not have confirmation that the Currency Exchange Market will be in Path of Exile 2, its incredible popularity in PoE 1 means that it’s almost guaranteed to be included in its sequel

Do be aware that like Path of Exile 1, PoE 2 will also have a trading site where you will be able to trade items to other players without making use of Gold, including trading for equippable items that you can’t otherwise sell on the Currency Exchange Market.

Acquiring Gold

  1. You can sell items to vendors for Gold. The amount of Gold you receive is based on the item’s rarity, item level, its modifiers, and whether or not it is identified.

  2. Killing monsters! Gold will drop from monsters as you progress and if you are within a certain range, you will “vacuum” up the Gold without having to click it. However, if you are too far away, you will have to run closer to pick up the Gold

  3. Other Strategies: Unknown as for now, but we will have plenty of guides after launch!

Additional Tips

  1. Identify items before you sell them for increased Gold from Vendors. If you find a Rare item, it will sell for a substantially higher amount of Gold if you identify it first, and with the introduction of Path of Exile’s own Deckard Cain-like figure, The Hooded One, you will be able to easily identify your items en masse before selling them

  2. Selling Currency to Vendors for extra bits of Gold usually isn’t a good idea.

  3. If you feel that you have enough Gold, you can also Disenchant items with some Vendors to receive Currency Shards instead. If you collect a stack of 10 Currency Shards, it will automatically be converted into a full Currency Orb of that type (note: some Currency types may require more Shards to create a full Orb. We will update this section once we have confirmation)

Wrap Up

That’s all we know about Gold right now. It’s entirely possible that Path of Exile 2 will find more uses for Gold in the Endgame beyond Gambling it away for a chance to find a high value unique, or for trading using the Currency Exchange Market. We will update this guide as soon as we know, as well as with any Gold farming strategies that we may discover.
