Almost any game where you can level up your character will have multiple sources of getting that precious XP. Of all the methods of acquiring XP in gaming, only two make an appearance In Windrose, and the most obvious way is not included.
Here's how you get XP in Windrose and the best methods for grinding those levels.
How to get XP
Let's first address the elephant in the room: killing enemies does not provide XP.
Defeating enemies is only good for the items they drop and in some cases progressing certain challenges and quests. This may seem surprising and anti-intuitive for an RPG, but it's for a good reason - Windrose instead wants to encourage you to explore rather than grind for levels. It also means the game can better pace the game knowing certain areas are limited in the XP they can give you.
So, how do you actually get exp?
Completing Quests
The first method is to complete quests. Anything under the "journal" tab - Main Quests, Side Quests, etc - will give you XP.
These are handy to complete anyway as they point you in the right direction story wise and allow you to unlock more features, materials, and locations. They're key for progression in more ways than just levelling you up.
Having said that, they are not the premier strategy for levelling fast.
Exploring Points of Interest
The islands of Windrose are littered with POIs. From pirate camps, to shipwrecks, to ruins - all of them are worth checking out not just for their loot but for their XP.
It's important to note that you only get the XP for these POIs once you fully complete them. If there are 3 chests and you've only found 2, you'll need to locate that last set in the trio before getting any experience at all.
Sailing around the High Seas and looking for new islands with new POIs is the best way to level up. We recommend exploring the oceans, following the silhouettes on the horizon and checking you map for land. Put down a tent when you disembark just in case, and go crazy!
Why You Need to Level Up
The key advantages of getting XP in Windrose are stat increases. There are no ability or gear level requirements so advancing your character serves only to make them stronger fundamentally.
There are two ways this works:
Stat Points
Upon level up, you will receive points to assign to whichever stat you like. These stats provide numerous benefits such as increased damage, crit chance, health, and stamina.
Personally we find Endurance to be the most beneficial as it directly increases your stamina which is used for a wide variety of actions in the game.
Talent Points
In addition to Stat points, you will receive points to put into various nodes in your Talent tree. These benefits are generally combat focused and allow you to specialise in a particular strategy, whether that's one-handed, two-handed, guns, dodging, parrying, etc.
