Intro

Any fans of RPGs, especially those with crafting, will know the bane of inventory management. You're deep in a cave filling your pouch with loot when suddenly the dreaded red iron weight appears, signaling the bulging your pockets and start of your problems.

Windrose doesn't escape the over-encumbered woes, but there are a few ways to make it easier. Specifically, backpacks. Here's all the backpacks in the game and how to get them.

Torn Sailcloth Bag

Your first bag in Windrose will be the Torn Sailcloth Bag. It doesn't do much at a measely 4 slot increase, but it's better than nothing.

Progress through the quests until you can create your first Workbench (it should take you all of 5 minutes, provided you can escape the wrath of the various cantankerous boars waiting for you to spawn).

Acquiring the Torn Sailcloth Bag is as simple as collecting the necessary resources and crafting it from the bench. This is what you'll need:

Name

Materials

Torn Sailcloth Bag

Coarse Fabric x 2

Rope x 1

You'll need a total of 9 Plant Fibers to create these items, also made at the Workbench.

Sailor Backpack

The next bag available to you is the Sailor Backpack. This is doubly as good as its younger brother, giving 8 extra slots instead of just 4.

Continue further through the quests until you unlock the Level 2 Workbench which will open up this crafting recipe.

Name

Materials

Sailor Backpack

Torn Sailcloth Bag x 1

Rough Hide x 1

Copper Ingot x2

Rough Hides are found from defeating the various beasts across the island such as Boars and Wolves. Copper Ingots come from smelting Copper Ore - something you must have already done to unlock the Level 2 Workbench.

Bosun Backpack

Moving up from 8 slots to 12 is the Bosun Backpack. Much like its predecessor, this is an upgraded bag that requires the previous bag to craft.

An upgrade of the Workbench is once again needed before you can craft this bag, this time to Level 3.

Name

Materials

Bosun Backpack

Sailor Backpack x 1

Tanned Leather x 5

Foothills Iron Ingot x 2

This is the first bag that requires you to sail away from the cosy shores of home to the Foothills beyond. Without doing so, you won't be able to find the Iron necessary.

Tanned Leather is created from Rough Hide and Tanning, which is available from the Alchemy Table.

Quatermaster Backpack

The penultimate satchel available is the Quartermaster Backpack. Going from 12 to 16 slots, this bag doesn't need any further upgrades to the Workbench but does require you to go croc hunting.

Name

Materials

Quartermaster Backpack

Bosun Backpack x 1

Crocodile Hide Piece x 5

Crocodiles are found in the Swamps of the Caribbean. This is the third and final zone available to players in the Early Access.

Traveler Backpack

The last and most impressive backpack available in Windrose is the Traveler's Backpack, boasting a whopping 20 slot capacity.

This backpack doesn't require crafting to obtain, instead being bought from the Goods Sellers in Tortuga for a total of 500 Piastre, making this either the easiest or hardest bag to obtain depending on your perspective.

As of writing this post, this bag seems to be stuck in the game files and may not be in-game - or it's hiding very well from us.

Name

Cost

Traveler Backpack

Pisatre x500

Pisatre is a silver coin hailing from Spain. It can be found in chest across the various POIs on the map, given as quest rewards, or exchanged for Guineas at the Smugglers of Port Royal.

Ship Cargo

Whereas not strictly inventory size it's worth mentioning that a great tool for managing your carrying capacity is to make use of storage options. The primary and first encountered are containers available from the crafting menu - these are the core of your base infrastructure.

On the move however, you can use your ship as a somewhat mobile storage unit to keep your pack light while exploring various islands. Your initial ship won't be able to hold items but starting from the Ketch, unlocked after finishing the quest "I Need a Bigger Boat", you will be able to store objects on your naval vessel to your heart's content.
