Diablo 4's Season of Death Rising may have just revealed the return of Malthael, the Angel of Death.
During the final moments of the seasonal questline, we return to Pandemonium, encounter one of Malthael's most trusted servants from Diablo 3, and hear a chilling warning:
"He is coming."
And if that wasn't enough, the story ends with a mysterious stranger whose voice seems strangely familiar to the Wanderer. Could Blizzard be setting up Malthael's return? And who exactly is this mysterious stranger?
Let's talk about it
The Ullo Sar Cult
The seasonal story begins with us investigating a death cult known as the Ullo Sar - and their philosophy is surprisingly bleak
They believe Sanctuary is beyond saving. That suffering is inevitable and nothing can stop what is coming. And rather than fight against it, they believe the only true salvation is to embrace death itself
Throughout the questline, the cult opens Ruptures leading directly into Pandemonium. From these Ruptures pour demons, cultists, twisted creatures, and even corrupted angels, all spilling into Sanctuary
As we continue disrupting their plans, we begin hearing a mysterious hollow voice speaking directly to the Wanderer. The voice repeatedly dismisses our accomplishments and power, insisting that none of it matters in the face of what is coming
Return to Pandemonium
Eventually, a ledger recovered from the cult is brought to Dannica. Moments later, a massive Rupture tears open directly in the middle of Zarbinzet. Chasing after it leads us somewhere Diablo fans haven't visited in over a decade: Pandemonium
More specifically, the Pandemonium Fortress. The last time we were here was Diablo 3 during Reaper of Souls and honestly, I have to give credit to the Diablo 4 team here. The amount of environmental detail and unique assets present in this area is impressive, especially for a seasonal storyline. That detail becomes important because this doesn't feel like a simple one-off seasonal location, it feels like Blizzard intentionally wants us to remember this place
Seraziel Returns
As we fight through Pandemonium, we eventually arrive at a very familiar location - the precipice where Malthael himself was confronted during Reaper of Souls. And waiting for us there is the source of the mysterious voice: Seraziel
For those who don't remember, Seraziel served as one of Malthael's Reapers and was responsible for guarding the Well of Souls within Pandemonium back in Diablo 3. So she isn't a random seasonal villain, she is directly tied to Malthael and after defeating her, she leaves us with a single warning: "He is coming".
Just let that sink in for a moment - He is coming. Given Seraziel's connection to the Angel of Death, who else could she possibly be referring to? Malthael is the obvious answer here. And if that's true, this may be the strongest indication we've seen yet that Blizzard is laying groundwork for his return
The Stranger
But surprisingly, I don't think Seraziel is the biggest mystery here. After reporting everything that happened in Pandemonium back to Dannica, the two of you are approached by a mysterious stranger.The stranger says: "Nothing can be done. Against the Reapers, against Death itself. There is nothing you can do."
When asked who they are, the stranger refuses to answer. Instead, they simply state that they are nobody. And then comes the part that immediately caught my attention - The Wanderer comments that they seem familiar. And I have been trying to figure out who it might be ever since finishing the questline. Whatever the answer is, Blizzard deliberately included that line for a reason. The Wanderer recognizing him feels like a clue. And right now, I think it's the biggest unanswered question from the entire seasonal storyline
Tyrael's Involvement
Afterward, additional dialogue with Dannica reveals even more interesting details. When asked about the Reapers, she recounts the history of Malthael's campaign against humanity and the devastation he caused during Reaper of Souls. The Wanderer then requests that everything they've learned be documented and sent directly to Tyrael
That mention alone is significant, because Tyrael has been absent for much of Diablo 4's story. Yet now, with Reapers reappearing, Seraziel warning that "He is coming," and mysterious events unfolding in Pandemonium, the story specifically calls attention to him, and that doesn't feel accidental
What Is Blizzard Setting Up?
Unlike many previous seasonal stories, this one doesn't really feel self-contained. Instead, it ends at a cliffhanger and leaves the door open for something much larger. We have:
• Pandemonium returning • Reapers returning • Seraziel returning • A warning that "He is coming" • A mysterious stranger • Tyrael being directly referenced
That's a lot of threads to leave hanging. Could Blizzard be building toward an expansion centered around Malthael and the Reapers? Could this be a bridge between Lord of Hatred and whatever comes next? Or is all of this simply a misdirection toward an entirely different threat?
Personally, I think there is far too much focus on Malthael and the Reapers for this to be meaningless. But what do you think? Was Seraziel talking about Malthael? And who is the mysterious stranger? Do you think Blizzard is setting up the return of the Angel of Death?
