Having tested a bunch of leveling builds with fresh characters with no hand-me-downs, anything like that, this has been the smoothest, fastest, and honestly, the most fun way to get a Barbarian to Max Level.
This is a full comprehensive guide broken up into level segments to help you understand where you should be at any given time. Make sure to check out the variants and all the written sections so that you don't miss anything important.
For 1 to 20 assuming a fresh character you may get a couple of legendaries but there is no guarantee which one you'll have, typically it Is always best to flex the build a little bit to make use of anything you might find.
For example, if you find Ancestral Force you may for the moment want to swap to Hammer of the Ancients to make use of it.
Stat Priority is:
- Strength
- Max Life
If you are luck enough to find runes this early on, you'll pretty much just slap in whatever you find.

Build Notes
1 - 35
- Flay until you have 8 stacks of Furious Upheaval (indicated on the skill bar).
- Upheaval.
- Mighty Throw on cooldown.
- Rallying Cry to break CC.
- Iron Maelstrom for large packs of enemies.
35 - 60
- Spam your shouts as you enter combat.
- Whirlwind
- Wrath of the Berserker for tougher enemies.
From levels 1 - 35 or until you unlock your Key Passive we will be playing a Flay / Upheaval build which focuses on building up powerful AoE attack through Furious Upheaval and then filling the gaps with some Thorns damage.
The great thing about this setup is it doesn't need any aspect or specific gear it just works.
From the time you unlock your Key Passive onward we will be making a full transition into a Thorns Whirlwind build. Using the new key passive Barbed Carapace we can juice our thorns damage early on while leveling and Whirlwind is an excellent skill in its own right when it comes to speedfarming.
We get speed, mobility, and fantastic AoE damage all the right ingredients for a powerful leveling build.
