In-Depth Explanation

Notes on Gameplay

While the exotic armor and weapon are both focused on melee, the build itself is NOT simply about punching. Rather, both items add extremely powerful abilities and will allow to max the utility of the build.

If you are facing a champion or miniboss, shield bashing it is the best choice, since you can so easily delete them even in endgame content. There really is no faster way in the game to counter Barrier and Overload champions, since you can 1-hit them with an active Void Overshield, and even if Peregrine Strike did not progress to its maximum potential, because of a short jump time, it will suppress the target, stunning the Overload champion and disabling the Barrier champions abilities, making them easy targets for a finishing move. Even Unstoppable champions easily fall, once stunned, by jumping behind them and hitting the crit spot on the back.

You can try to hit Tormentor's shoulder crit spots with the shield bash, but it is more advisable to shoot them and rather attempt to go for a hit on the chest or back crit spot. Once you have the Tormentor's attention, prepare for its jumping attack, sprint towards it, as it prepares to jump, jump yourself, and direct your jump a 180° degress around into the back of the Tormentor, while it is still in the landing pose. Massive, safe damage. If you want to go for a shoulder, instead sprint vertically away from the Tormentor's jump path, instead of towards it.

Versus riff-raff like rank-and-file troops and elites, the grenade glaive combo is far more effective. Devour's grenade energy generation is doubled for ( glaive ) melee kills, so you can easily spam a new Void Spike Grenade every couple of seconds, creating ridiculous explosion chains, thanks to the Controlled Demolitionist aspect. Do not make the mistake of purely trying to glaive melee every target! Vexcalibur has good range and the bolts hit quite hard. Better, if i.e. 2 of 5 fired bolts will kill a target, the other 3 can fly on and hit other targets, making it very ammo effective. If the target is in shotgun range, just continue glaive meleeing, if its in auto-rifle range, do not bother running up to a singe target and just shoot it, instead. Even in CQC, I recommend firing an occasional shot to generate new shield energy and break elemental shields, which could be bothersome to break with glaive melee's pure kinetic attacks.

Do not sleep on the defensive power of your glaive! If you are noticing a deadly attack coming for you, a stomp, or are surprised by horde in your back, BLOCK(!!!) to negate almost all damage and retreat while keeping firing, to maintain shield energy. Alternatively, you can move towards the group and try to enter CQC.

Gameplay Loop

Start by firing Vexcalibur to generate some shield energy.
Next, briefly block to generate a Void Overshield, which will double your powered and elemental melee damage and turn your fists elemental. It will also quintuple your base grenade recharge rate.
Switch to your Primary Weapon to disable glaive melee.
Sprint, then jump to activate Peregrine Strike.
Shield Bash !!! to erase your target, turn surrounding enemies volatile, gain a full Void Overshield and generate an Orb of Power. It will also suppress the target and enemies in a very small radius around it.
Collect Orbs of Power to restore 70 HP, 2 armor charges and activate Devour ; Collect Void Breaches to regain 10% Rally Barricade energy and activate Devour.
Switch back to Vexcalibur.
Hold Block while glaive meleeing to ignore delays between the 3 hit combos, fully restore an existing Void Overshield on kills and generate grenade energy.
Weave in Elemental Fist Melee and Scatter Grenades to keep your foes volatile and create Void Breaches.
Finish an enemy to lose 4 armor charges and restore 64% Shield Bash energy, and turn surrounding enemies volatile.
